A summary of the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) was recently published in Practical Neurology. The article gives a detailed account of the history and rationale of the study, as well as an overview of the study protocol. The newly added Prodromal and Genetic cohorts are also described in detail, as well as the potential overlap with the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI).

Summary of the PPMI Genetic Cohort Kick-Off Meeting

The PPMI Genetic Cohort Kick-Off Meeting took place on September 16th & 17th in New York, NY. Site Investigators, study staff, Study Core members, and members of the Steering Committee attended the two-day meeting to discuss the launch of the new Genetic Cohort in PPMI. The meeting covered the rationale for the new cohort, lessons learned from previous studies, and operational procedures.

Next month, PPMI Steering Committee members have invited clinical site teams and study core members to attend a two-day meeting in New York to kick-off the launch of the new Genetic Cohort. The meeting will feature presentations from the study cores, an overview of the amended study protocol, and recruitment strategies.

PPMI Study to add new Genetic Cohort

The PPMI Steering Committee has decided to expand PPMI to include a Genetic Cohort. It is hoped that this additional cohort, called G-PPMI, will provide researchers with the opportunity to examine biomarker progression in this unique group of subjects. The PPMI study has built a robust infrastructure of sites and cores with well-defined processes to ensure standardization across sites that will be to support the Genetic Cohort. G-PPMI is currently in the planning phase.
