Researchers identify biomarker for early cognitive decline in Parkinson’s disease patients using PPMI data

Many patients with Parkinson?s Disease (PD) develop mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia. Identifying biomarkers for cognitive impairment could be instrumental in facilitating both early diagnosis of MCI and developing new cognitive-enhancing treatments. New research using PPMI data published in the Journal of Parkinson?s Disease indicates that lower concentrations of ?-synuclein in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is associated with reduced performance on several cognitive tests.

Diffusion Tensor Imaging Reflects Degree of Motor Symptoms

In a recent publication in Movement Disorders, Zhang, et al. used PPMI data and found that diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) detected neural fiber abnormalities in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and that the degree of deviation from normal neural fiber integrity is associated with the severity of motor symptoms in patients.

Frontiers in Neuroscience recently published an article by Garg, et al. comparing changes in the volume of different regions of the brain between healthy controls and people with Parkinson's using structural MRIs from PPMI and the University of British Columbia.

SWEDDs and Nonmotor Symptoms Publication

In a recent paper in Movement Disorders, researchers sought to better understand SWEDDs compared to people with Parkinson's and healthy controls (HCs) by comparing the nonmotor symptoms for each group using the PPMI baseline data. Certain symptoms, like orthostatic hypotension, were found to be more common in SWEDDs than in PD participants.

Results Published on Cognitive Performance and Neuropsychatric Symptoms

In a paper published in Movement Disorders, Weintraub, et al. investigate the prevalence of cognitive impairment and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), such as depression, apathy, and anxiety, in early, unmedicated people with Parkinson's compared with healthy controls (HCs) using the PPMI baseline data.

Daytime Sleepiness and Fatigue Associated with Cognitive Impairment

A recent publication in the journal Parkinsonism and Related Disorders used PPMI data to find that more severe daytime sleepiness and fatigue are associated with greater cognitive impairment. The study's researchers used PPMI data as well as data from two other studies in order to examine this relationship across the different stages of Parkinson's.
