CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta interviewed Michael J. Fox about Parkinson’s disease and his hopes for the future. Fox described Parkinson’s as a “gift that keeps on taking” and discussed how living with PD has made him more compassionate, curious and a risk taker.

The special report included information about current treatments for Parkinson’s and The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s work to speed better therapies and, ultimately, a cure. The Foundation’s recently launched international clinical trial, the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI), was discussed as an example of the type of innovation and collaboration that is needed to advance drug development.

PPMI is a landmark clinical trial that aims to find biomarkers of PD progression. Dr. Bernard Ravina, who was also interviewed by Gupta, discussed the need for biomarkers to find treatments that can slow, stop or reverse the progression of Parkinson’s.

Fox also talked about the different ways that people can get involved in the search for a cure, from participating in clinical trials to helping fund important research.
