Diffusion Tensor Imaging Reflects Degree of Motor Symptoms

In a recent publication in Movement Disorders, Zhang, et al. used PPMI data and found that diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) detected neural fiber abnormalities in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) and that the degree of deviation from normal neural fiber integrity is associated with the severity of motor symptoms in patients.

Results Published on Cognitive Performance and Neuropsychatric Symptoms

In a paper published in Movement Disorders, Weintraub, et al. investigate the prevalence of cognitive impairment and neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS), such as depression, apathy, and anxiety, in early, unmedicated people with Parkinson's compared with healthy controls (HCs) using the PPMI baseline data.

Whole Exome Sequencing Data Now Available

The PPMI Genetics Core has just made their whole exome sequencing data live in the PPMI database. This sequencing targeted 201,121 Exons, UTRs, and miRNA in DNA from whole-blood from the original PPMI cohort of over 600 PD, SWEDD, and control subjects. First Longitudinal Findings: Psychiatric Symptoms More Common in Untreated PD Patients than Controls

The first longitudinal findings from PPMI have been published. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania affiliated with PPMI published in the journal Neurology that depression, anxiety and fatigue are more common in newly diagnosed ParkinsonÂ’s disease patients compared to the general population.
