Select Preliminary Baseline Data for 90% of Cohort Recruited is Presented at AAN
PPMI senior leadership presented PPMI data collected so far at the American Academy of Neurology’s 75th annual meeting. The poster used baseline data to give a preliminary sense of the characteristics of the PPMI cohort. The poster also highlights CSF acquisition success rates in PPMI and data from baseline DaTSCANs.

Daniel Weintraub, MD, and a team at the University of Pennsylvania publish the first paper using PPMI data demonstrating that Parkinson's itself does not confer a higher risk for ICDs, supporting other research that suggests the high prevalence of ICDs in people with PD is related to Parkinson's medications, and not the disease itself.

Dr. Daniel Weintraub analyzes the QUIP data from the PPMI database to assess frequencies of impulse disorders in PD patients and comparing this to control participants. Through his analysis using multivariable models, a diagnosis of PD was not associated with symptoms of any impulse control or related behavior (p ≥ 0.10 in all cases).

A new page has been added to the site to highlight all of the proposed analyses submitted by individuals who sign up to access the data. Individuals who are interested in using PPMI data can use this resource to better understand potential uses of the data, identify collaborators, and spark new research ideas.

These results suggest that PD itself does not confer an increased risk for development of ICD symptoms and related behaviors, which reinforces the reported association between PD medications and ICDs in PD. Given that approximately 20% of untreated PD patients screen positive for ICD or related symptoms, long-term follow-up of the PPMI cohort will determine if such patients are at increased risk of ICD development when PD medications are initiated.

A statistics forum has been created to help investigators who are interested in accessing or who have accessed the PPMI database find additional information about the dataset.

With over 200 PPMI subjects enrolled, the clinical data and biospecimens is robust and available in real time. The goal of PPMI is to validate biomarkers of PD progression. The cornerstone of this study is making the data and samples collected available to the scientific community.
